Door Hangers vs. Flyers: Which Works Better for Your Brooklyn Business?

If your customers live within a few blocks of your business, paper can still reach them directly. Restaurants, contractors, cleaners, tutoring centers and tax offices all use door hangers and flyers for this. The question is which one fits your job.

When door hangers make sense

A door hanger goes on the handle, so the person has to touch it to get inside. That makes it a good fit when:

  • You serve homes, such as plumbing, painting, roofing, cleaning, or food delivery.
  • You want to cover specific streets around a job you are doing.
  • You want the piece to feel more solid than a sheet of paper.

When flyers make sense

Flyers are more flexible. They work when:

  • You hand them out in person, at your counter or at an event.
  • You want them in other shops, community boards or mosques and churches, with permission.
  • You have more to say, such as a list of services or a schedule.
  • You want to print on both sides.

Many businesses use both: door hangers for homes, and flyers for the counter and for events.

What to print

Whichever you pick, the same rules apply:

  • One clear offer or message. "Now delivering to Bay Ridge" is stronger than a list of everything you do.
  • A headline people can read from arm's length.
  • Your phone number, large. Include WhatsApp if your customers use it.
  • Your address and hours.
  • One action. Call, message, or visit. Choose one to lead with.
  • The right language. Print in the language your customers read at home. Arabic and English on one piece, or separate versions for different streets, both work.

How to plan a neighborhood drop

  1. Draw your area. Start with the blocks closest to your shop or your current job.
  2. Count the doors. Use that to decide how many to order.
  3. Pick the timing. Avoid holidays and heavy weather, and match the drop to when people need you. A tax office and a roofer have different seasons.
  4. Track it. Ask every new caller how they heard about you, or print a simple code word to mention when they call.

Don't put printed pieces in mailboxes. In the US, mailboxes are for postage-paid mail only. To reach every address on a route through the mail, ask about EDDM postcards. Check your local rules on leaving flyers on doors and cars, too.

How many should you print?

Start with the number of doors in your area and add extras for your counter. If you are testing a new offer, begin with a smaller area, see what happens, and then reorder for the next few blocks. Keep your artwork ready, so a repeat order is quick.

Repeat it

One drop rarely tells you much. People may keep a piece and call weeks later, or ignore it until they need you. If you can, plan two or three rounds on the same blocks before you judge the results.
